The photo John shows is going the opposite way the steam passenger train is going. The films were shot from the overpass, with the train backing to the depot. The Burlington freight and the steamer on the coal train would have been going the opposite direction from the passenger train you show.
Westbound would coincide with the train we have footage riding, as it pulls into the depot headed this direction as well.
Question? Was not the depot on the north-south joint-line? Where was the connection to go west on the Royal Gorge line.
Pueblo Union Depot is on the D&RGW's line to Walsenburg and Trinidad, at the south of the yards, not on the Denver - Salida main. There wasn't actually a direct, non-stop path from Denver to Salida - trains changed directions at Pueblo.

Looking at a few pictures, it appears that no. 1 (which in 1953 arrived first, and left while no. 2 was in the station) backed into the station, and no. 2 pulled in loco first. (The station is between the bottom of the wye, inside the purple L-shaped area.)
