The people in Alamosa did not want the narrow gauge. That is one reason why Bob Richardson moved the RR Musuem to Golden.
In 1971, I went down for the first C&TS run. On the way back to Denver, I stopped for gas in Alamosa. The owner asked me if I was fishing. I told him I came to see the train. His response was "I am glad them dammed things are gone, all they did was dirty up my wife's laundry hanging on the line." When I told him that if it were not for the railroad, he would not be getting my business, he just grumbled and walked away.
I think the folks of Alamosa were worse than Durango in not understanding the business impact a railroad MIGHT have.
