Don is right. The entire 64 mile stretch was saved so that Toltec Gorge, the two tunnels and the Big Horn area could be viewed. I've always just wanted to run a train from Chama to the Big Horn Wye and back. After that it's pretty much desert.
Also remember that the line was abandoned so that the new highway could come into Durango. Sad in turns of taking away a great ride from Durango to Chama, but great in turns of a safer road to Durango.
