I've put in a pitch at various times to bridge the gap between the NG and the SG in Antonito with two legs of the wye being dual gauge along with the tail of the wye. An extra narrow gauge siding could also be included. This would give some working dual gauge trackage and be somewhat historic also. A steam locomotive could push a standard gauge car around using the idler car. Also the trackage around the wye could be used to put together extra passenger trains if the schedule ever needed additional trains. The extra siding could also be used for storage as an expanded schedule, if it ever happens, would certainly require more passenger cars.
All that would be needed for this would be a working agreement with the SLRG so that Narrow Gauge trains would never get in the way of SLRG regular trains and lots of money.
I seriously doubt if anybody on the SLRG would ever commit to the idea of dual gauge to Alamosa. I personally doubt if there would be much patronage as it is really a straight non-scenic stretch of railroad.
As long as money IS THE ONLY OBJECT why not fix up the area around the old Antonito train station as well as the station itself. From the wye have a park fixed up all the way to the Highway 285 crossing where the Information Center is located and call it the "Antonito Railroad Park". It certainly wouldn't be historic but could be attractive and show what the history of the area would have been like. It could help boost the economy of Antonito which was definitely a railroad town.
Dreams are fun.
