I have ridden both the D&S (once back when it was still owned by the Rio Grande) & C&TS 3 times in my lifetime. Both are great examples of narrow gauge railroading in the steam era but for different reasons for each railroad.
I may get flamed for saying this, but I much prefer the Chama to Osier portion of the C&TS than the Osier to Antonito portion of the C&TS.
I also find the scenery between Durango and Chama much better. Can anyone tell me the specific reasons why the Chama to Antonito section was chosen for preservation of the Chama to Durango or Chama to Pagosa Springs section?
If saving an example of narrow gauge mountain railroading was the objective, why not Chama to Osier?
I have never been able to find in print anywhere just what the logic involved was concerning which section of the narrow gauge to perserve.
Also, was there any attempt to purchase the Silverton branch from the Rio Grande instead of the Chama to Antonito branch?
Thanks for providing the history behind the creation of the C&TS.
