I have participated in Ride the Rockies for 4+ years. Most of the participants are polite, respectful cyclists who ride single file and obey traffic laws. The highway patrol escorts do a good job of monitoring the participants. I have seen them give stern warnings to people who do not follow the rules and they have the ability to yank people off the course.
My friends and I spend alot of money in the towns where we stay. Ride the Rockies also makes donations to local organizations. Your town is lucky to have this event.
Last year in Grand Junction, a woman driving a truck was arrested after swerving towards some of the cyclists in her truck and endangering some of the participants. It works both ways.
Cyclists and cars should respect the rules of the road and each other.
