Being narrow of gauge and a cyclist, I must come to the defense of Ride the Rockies. First, as stated in previous posts, it is not a race, it is a tour. A race is Tour de France. Second, several thousand riders, plus support persons and vehicles brings in big buck$. Yes, it is a pain to get caught in a tour especially early in the day when the pack is bunched up, what better advertising could you ask for in the long run for CATS, Chama and Antanito? How many of those riders will come back down the road and ride the train?
By the time the train leaves at 10, most of the riders will be gone and past both passes or at least close to it. Having been caught in cattle drives on back country roads; just pull over, shut off the vehicle and enjoy. Most riders will thank you for that. There is nothing worse than having to worry about that slow moving vehicle behind you with its horn blaring!
My advise to merchants and cafes in Chama; stock up on energy drinks, put pasta on the menu and get out there and meet and greet the riders. They are a great bunch of people
