Hi, All -
Not to be beating a dead horse or anything, but I think about 99 & 44/100 percent of those who post here are strongly in favor of keeping the C&TS as historic as possible, and several of us have ranted more than once about the RGRPC and its marketing agency apparently being oblivious to their strongest marketing asset: the unique historic character of the railroad and its environs.
With a new beginning next season, one of the things we all should press for with the commission (and new operator, if there is one), is the establishment of a formal committee or subset of the Board to ensure historical accuracy is maintained to the greatest extent possible consistent with safe operation, and that an emphasis on heritage tourism be a part of any and all marketing efforts AND EQUIPMENT UPGRADES.
While the average family vacationer may be looking for comfort and convenience, there are many heritage tourists (like myself) who prefer some character in their accomodations. Long before I became acquainted with Roger Hogan, I made it a point to stay at THE (Shamrock) HOTEL when possible, and only once have ended up at one of the "fancy" places on the south side of town when both The Hotel and Fosters were 'full up'. (I will admit that there is one place I stayed in Antonito with a dribbling, barely luke-warm shower to which I will not return.)
Of the small handful of historic railroads that still operate with their original equipment and have preserved not just engines and cars but shops and other facilities as well, the C&TS has the most spectacular trip to offer, and having the D&RGW nearby is an asset, not competition. There is a significant percent of their patrons who would ride the C&TS as well - IF they knew about us and what we have to offer. We're the longest and highest, and with just a little effort we could be among the two or three most historic as well.
Going West to East, there are:
. The Sierra RR
. The Nevada Northern
. The Durango & Silverton
. The Cumbres & Toltec
. The East Broad Top
The first two are standard gauge, and the rest narrow. Are there any others with more than ten miles of track, original engines and cars, and more-or-less intact original servicing facilities, depots, etc.? Does Sumpter Valley still have their original depot, enginehouse, etc.?? Are there any others besides these six that are not just Disney-style "tourist railroads"???
