The annunciators I used to deal with on BN were actually microphones in the field that we could turn on and off. In addition some had a series of clicks when they were on that let you know. After a while you'd get used to the sound quality and realtive speed of the train so as to know what location the train was passing. I think the last of ours around Alliance NE were taken out 1979-1980 time frame.
