My phone rang the other night and is was an acquaintance who had spent some time working in Chama. He had some exciting news. I won't mention any names because I guess none of this is official yet. But having spent a bunch of time on the ng. in the 60's, I'm a nitpicker about missing details. But there is hope for us nitpicking geezers!
One of course is the Cumbres snow sheds. Apparently the Friends are putting some thought into maybe making a restoration happen. As my historian friend Gordon Chappell comments, Cumbres is historically INACCURATE without the sheds because they were ALWAYS there during DRGW times. Maybe that will be another of those miracles the Friends can pull off.
But almost as exciting are the plans to restore at least a part of the telegraph line. These lines were integral to the operation of the railroad by the DRGW, but disappearred like the snow sheds when they were no longer need by the C&TS. The poles and lines were also an integral part of the landscape, just like the snow sheds, buildings, stock pens, phone booths, and so on. Without them the historic view is compromised.
It's nice to see these "details" getting attention. They not only help complete the historic picture, but they provide significant opportunities for interpretation and education. I'm especially excited about the possibility of opening a "working" train order station somewhere along line....and then get Ed Trump to teach some docents railroad morse.
Neat stuff.
