Years ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to meet and spend time with a number of old time D&RGW men and some famous railroad photographers. I was excited about seeing all the stuff at Chama as I missed it when it was D&RGW. I asked them if they ever went to Chama or Durango and they all laughed. They said that the remaining stuff there was a carnival ride compared to what they had seen. They said it was too painful to see it compared to the glory days of the D&RGW.
I was lucky enough to be there for the first C&TS run, first double header, first freight train, first flanger run, first rotary run. Have ridden a number of the rider fregihts and rotary runs. Now I find myself thinking of those days as the glory days of the C&TS and find it painful to see what is happening now.
Stand back and let the flames begin.
The C&TS was formed to (1) preserve a bit of the D&RGW narrow gauge and (2) to boost the economy of the area. Some seem to have forgotten this.
