If it were me I would have the friends paint by hand one coat on ALL THE CHAMA cars this week(too late for that now probably). Then hire a guy to come in and SPRAY PAINT a second coat on all of them. A good painter could probably do that second coat on all the cars in about 2 days, which would be quite cost effective and get the job done.
There is probably more history in the Grande Gold Yellow cars than the green ones frankly. The Yellow cars started in about 1948, so that means they have been around what 57 years now!!! I don't think the D&RGW ever had Green or Red for that long. So, yes while the yellow was made as a tourist paint(remember the San Juan was done in 1951 anyway), at least its a historic tourist color that WAS USED by the D&RGW. I think more folks would remember that color than the Red. Also on bad weather days, the yellow cars would look brighter in the yard, as well as in the coutryside. I think the weather will play havoc with any color due to the extreme conditions out there. The only way to protect them is to put them indoors during the offseason, and thats not likely to happen for many years to come. Should be interesting to see how these new colors wear in the elements and time.
