I agree it was the D&RGW "Racetrack" during the good old days, and on the fantrips it was fun to have the train cranking along at a fast pace. We have some shots of a 1961 trip out of Alamosa with 476 and its moving! However, realistically, while we as fans like it, I can't see any benefit to the average tourist. As one guy just mentioned they would be bored to tears. He makes a good point about riding to Antonito from Chama also. I enjoy the trip from Antonito in the morning, with the sun at your side, or back. On the John Craft trips we left around 7:30. That was great. Another reason I like charter trains, they make use of early sun and late sun. The tourist trains on the C&TS tend to run around noon lighting!!!
If the Alamosa Shops and yard were still there, then I think it would have made a nice center for a museum, and a good destination. As it is today, the only factor for starting there is to access more people, and better services for tourists.
