My ride from Antonito to Alamosa in the coach version of the Alamosa, clipping along at about 30 mph, after sunset, with one kerosene lamp lit in the car, the sounds of a creaking wood coach, a car full of people quietly savoring a memorable trip--probably the single best ride on the narrow gauge in all my years. I can't think of a single boring trip in 48 years of riding these trains, even the 15 hour day I spent couped up in a boxcar handling food for the filming of a Dodge commercial. I've ridden on all the private cars, coaches, engines, and you name it, (including a trip along the High Line in the Casey Jones), but that ride to Alamosa tops them all.
