I think places like D&S A SRR are great for kids with their shorter attention spans. The TVRM is great for my niece and nephew. I thoroughly enjoy it also.
As for a wife enjoying Chama, I'm not married so I can not address that directly. However, I got my interest in railroading from my Mom. Her family is Pennsy (12 members from about 1900 to about 1985). She enjoys the laid back atmosphere in Chama (a la Mayberry) and the railroad atmosphere reminds her of her childhood in Harrisburg. She does not want to go out to the four corners and miss Chama.
I know C&TS Chama is not anywhere near PRR Harrisburg/Enola, but a major yard with up to six active steamers with no fencing goes along way to reminding Mom of her childhood memories. Sometimes smells and sounds evoke stronger memories than sight and details.

Chama - #1 vacation spot in my book.
