Freight traffic runs in the neighborhood of 1500-2000 loads a year, and that figure may be generous. There are only two shippers left on the road, Dicalite Corp which loads around five covered hoppers of diatomaceous earth a week at a reload point on Cayton siding, and Sierra Pacific Industries, which loads perhaps 15-25 centerbeams of lumber per week, plus woochips when and if Union Pacific delivers empty chip racks to the McCloud. SPI has grown disgusted with the service provided by the McCloud due to a rash of derailments that destroyed several woodchip and lumber loads during the first half of this year, plus continuous interuptions of service caused by smaller derailments. The railroad put trains on the ties 18 times in the first 5 months of 2004, all freight. Most of those were only one or two wheels, but there were a couple major wrecks in that total as well. SPI put the railroad on notice that it will cease shipping by rail from the Burney mill if service to them does not improve.
