Re: Making them last "forever"

I guess the greater goal is, especially if demand for narrow gauge steam trains grows on the D&S and Cumbres is, IS IT TIME TO ORDER NEW ENGINES and give the present fleet a chance for careful repair and maintenance. If the answer is yes-- where do you get them? Do you buy 3' used engines from such places as Central America, Mexico display locomotives, Philippines plantation engines, even Cuban imports,or other areas of the US and/or design and order new locomotives from Switzerland, China, wherever? Has anyone seriously contemplated designing and ordering new steam locomotives? What an adventure. What would be the cost comparison between rebuilding and importing a foreign US made three footers and a brand new engines from any source? Why not dust off the plans for the Unitah 2-6-6-2s, upgrade them with modern steam features (reference The Ultimpate Steam web site), and see who would be willing to build them at what price. Then call for donations! Very exciting.
