Very interesting, thank you. I was not aware of the letterspace term, which has apparently not made the transition to electronic typesetting TMK. Fonts have built-in kerning tables between glyph pairs, and programs like Adobe Illustrator essentially call these zero kerning. Spacing adjustment is done by entering a positive or negative kerning number.
And I agree, those big numerals drew my attention the first time I saw a photo, and having seen lots of old photos, they looked too close. But they are better than a certain recreation of a certain K-36 where the cab numerals were jammed almost on top of each other!
