It was not at all uncommon to jacket the brake pump with material like that of the boiler jacket. Interesting dress-up on the cylinders and steam chests as well. The class was built with regular painted iron (meaning black) cylinder and steam chest casings. Those in the photograph are obviously different, possibly done with planished iron like the boiler jacket, possibly painted some mimic of it or some other shiny material. Makes me curious as to whether that bit of decoration was applied to the class in whole, or only to 174 specifically.
I don't know what color the shop crews might've painted the lettering, but in new construction after the decline of the traditional block-shaded letters the D&RG tended to buy stuff with either yellow/gold lettering or white/aluminum depending on era. I would logically expect repaints to match the style of their respective eras but who ever said shop crews are always logical?
