174 was probably lettered in gold leaf or aluminum leaf, covered with a nice thick coat of varnish, which is making the lettering seem faded. Additionally, film of the era did not pick up the difference in the gray tones well making the lettering almost disappear. Many Otto Perry images from the 1910's show the locomotives with very faded or unreadable lettering, simply because the film "saw" the weathered black paint and aluminum lettering as the same gray scale.
