Craig - your reference to spreading cinders in the TRAINS magazine article - that was by John Gruber rather than Joe Hereford
Thanks to all who commented and enjoyed the photos
NGJon- Re photos of 1960s railfans chasing trains - we went to great lengths to keep other railfans out of the pictures. The assumpt was that the narrow gauge would vanish soon, but that the people would always be around. It turns out that we kind of had it backwards. Back in those days no one ever heard of "selfies". I do have pictures of Ernie on hikes, and in connection with AMTRAK and other events, but not on the narrow gauge, and I don't have a single photo of Joe Hereford. Actually Ernie was a bit more progressive than me, and did snap an occasional photo of his fellow chasers. I wish I had done the same. Here are a few photos, some of which have been posted here before
This is me some 53 years younger, taken on the 3-rail raceway approaching Antonito
Ernie at Edaville on the 2-foot gauge
Steve Patterson, John Charles and me - Both Steve and John have outstanding ng photos. We just have to convince them to post on the NGDF
This photo by Ernie may come closest to what you are thinking about - Jeff Stebbins (at right) and me chasing 476 and 478 on may 28, 1968
And sometimes we were just goofing around
