By this time the line between Alamosa and Durango was effectively shut down. The Durango train would have to survive with what engines were left in Durango which were the three K-28s (473, 476, and 478) along with 481 and 497. Remember that at this time, the line to Silverton still couldn't handle anything larger than the K-28s. The 481 was brought over freshly shopped to help with work trains (I believe) around the Durango area. I think I remember reading that 497 should of have made it back to Alamosa but didn't for some reason. I think when the line was sold in 1981, part of that purchase was the 4 remaining engines in Alamosa which were then trucked over at that point. They also upgraded the line to handle the larger engines.

PS: When did 486 go to the Royal Gorge? I know the D&S traded the 499 for her but I am unsure when he first made the trip over there.
