498 is passing the old dirt road crossing and Perry's Pond formed by the road embankment
The train is rounding Windy Point in all it's glory. It would be a few more years before the new highway was cut into the side of the mountain. I liked it the way it was.
Upon reaching Cumbres, helper engine 498 dropped the caboose and ran around the train heading for Alamosa. 484 then pulled the train ahead until it cleared the east switch. In this Ernie Robart photo 484 is backing the train into the siding to a coupling with the cars brought up in the morning Cumbres turn. After the assembled train cleared the east switch, 484 picked up a few additional empties stored on the pass and added them for the run to Alamosa.
Finally the assembled train left Cumbres and headed downgrade around Tanglefoot Curve for the 78-mile run to Alamosa
