Greg,
Jim was from the Cleveland area and would get a call from someone on the D&RGW that a train would be running in a day or two. He would drive straight through, film the train and then head back to Ohio. I don't remember exactly when I got the two WB tapes but it had to be in the 1980's sometime.
I met Jim in Cuba in 1981 on a "Rail Study Tours" trip to Cuba during a brief period when travel to Cuba was legal. I remember we came across an ALCO FA2 on a passenger train in San Luis, near Santiago de Cuba. I was amazed to see Jim burn off two rolls of Kodachrome with his motor winder at full auto! When a Russian diesel pulled into the station and met the FA, Jim did the same with it, then he proceeded to pace the Russian diesel out of town, on foot, for maybe a quarter mile!
Like I said, he was a "Gonzo" railfan.
