I know the spot you are talking about Michael, right about at Houtkraal, or just south of it where the hill ends coming up from De Aar. They used to work there pretty good. The Potfontein spot is here, where I shot the Orange Express in 1977 zooming northward in the morning. This was a little overpass and the main highway(Gravel road), was off to the right(West).

If you stayed at Kraankuil perhaps you noticed they had a public telephone. It was a CRANK PHONE. The couple that went with us called to check on their kids using that phone. They had a restaurant area near the bar there as well, so we would get dinner there after dark. Not much else around anywhere close to there, except De Aar, and Witput was closed in 1984 as I mentioned. Kraankuil was just about the top of a grade from Orange River. It was a good place to get early morning shots, but then there were no really bad spots for early morning shots, or all day for that matter. We tended to take a break around noon when the sun was higher, but really the sun was your friend down there. In 1984 we had one day with clouds on the George-Knysna line and rest was sunny.
