Hi Greg,
The SAR speed limit was 95kph (59mph), but there didn't seem to be any repercussions for exceeding it. In the cab ride sequence the speedometer appears to be showing 94kph but after the meet, you can tell the exhaust rate has picked up a bit. A couple of pans across the cab show the speedo at what I think was the 100kph (62mph)mark. In 1985 I paced a 23 class 4-8-2 at between 115kph and 120kph (74mph) on the line between Kroonstadt and Jo'burg.
The all stops passenger at Witput, April 1985.
This train had 19 carriages and slipped quite a bit getting started but the one on youtube probably had around 15 carriages since it wasn't a stopping train. Pretty good acceleration out of the Poupon stop with only one slip. Thanks for posting these.
