To me, forward from the cab they looked like mini Niagara's. They performed like a Niagara as well!
The SAR 25 and 25NC class engines have the horsepower of an SD-40! The 3450 that was modified into the class 26 Red Devil produced 3450 drawbar horsepower on test with a dynamometer car and in service, as much as 4,350 HP based on speed, grade and weight of train calculations.

The Red Devil was interesting for its technical advances, but it wasn't all that great to photograph. The gas producer firebox meant that it seldom made any smoke and the red color was an acquired taste. The 25NC, on the other hand, was a real fan favorite.
