I don't think the future of the EBT was ever as a tourist railroad (too isolated, too short, no spectacular scenery). But I think a reasonable case could be made for public funding of the EBT as a museum, especially the shop complex. The railroad is really an adjunct to the shop. It is more industrial history with a side of railroad history. Clearly priorities are needed, but at the risk of sounding a bit cynical a lot of public money has been spent for less worthy purposes. Apparently the railroad has never had a loud enough squeaky wheel.
