Greg - Following the closed road is the shortest way between Big Horn and lower Whiplash, but is not the only way. I have been on 2 others, one of which is only slightly longer. Going down the closed road risks a ticket and fine. If hordes of railfans go down it, the Forest Service guys will notice, or be tipped off by the local ranchers. So I discourage that route. Also, there are at least 2 ways to Whiplash from Antonito that don't go through Big Horn, and are used by the ranchers. I'll often use the shorter one, which crosses the track about 287.5. Good clearance is a comfort when using this road.
