I have heard the snakes are more likely between Sublette and Antonito, but not at the higher elevations. Heard this from several railroaders.
In a thread perhaps last year Carlos mentioned he was up at Russo's Rock one time to see the Indian markings, and had one nip at his leg, but was prepared with leggings or some such. I imagine if you live out that way you are prepared.
Also had a customer who called to order something one time, and related that he and his son were running along the track west of Antonito on afternoon, and abruptly came to a halt as a big rattler was inside the gauge. They went around!!!
Another guy on this board had some shots of a rattler he saw down on the Chili line a few years ago. I think his name was Greg also!!!
I try to avoid them, but once had a bunch of snakes crawling around my tripod in Hinton, WV. I was outa there waiting in the van until they were gone!! Ah, the good old days!!!
