Hi, again -
The early-seventies four-inch-tall 'CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD' lettering and
the 'Toltec Gorge Route' logos were done by Ernie Robart using stencils he created by hand for
that purpose. IIRC, there are still traces of some lettering on the brick 'paint shed' that were done
using these stencils, which Ernie believes are "somewhere in my garage" but he has not been able
to locate. (See photos on [
ngdiscussion.net].) We had hoped to use these original stencils to re-
letter #487 for her role as stand-in for #483 in movie make-up for the 40th Anniversary Celebration in
August, 2010, but had to settle for vinyl lettering instead. (See photos on [
ngdiscussion.net].)
IIRC, it was later decided that the four-inch lettering was too small, so a six-inch-tall variant - "CUMBRES
& TOLTEC SCENIC
R. R." - with a tri-color logo - was used instead to make the name more readable. Here's my own green-boiler-jacket variation of a beautiful Scott Turner photo from that era:
IMHO, that's how at least three of the four K-36's should be lettered from now on, with MAYBE one of them lettered with the flying
'Rio Grande' or 'DENVER & RIO GRANDE WESTERN' (with logo) available for charters ...
