You are right, Michael. The only time a tourist will recall what was on the tender is when they are telling their friends about the train ride they took and showing them pictures. But it is the name "Cumbres and Toltec" that should be on the tenders.
The solution is really simple, as you say, and it will benefit both the railroad and the charter riders. If the charter wants "historically accurate lettering" then they (the charter) should pay for a complete repaint of the whole engine. It would be a cost to the charter and the engine would get a fresh coat of paint. If they don't want to pay for that, then there are two options; (1) be satisfied with lettering as it is or (2) be satisfied with magnetic lettering.
