Word-of-mouth advertising is generally recognized as the most effective, so having the railroad's name on the tenders is essentially free advertising of the optimum kind.  Also, these days it's very likely that photos or videos are being sent to friends in real time via cell phone while some of these excited tourists are posing beside the engine while waiting to board the train ...

As a third alternative, we found in 2010 that spraying a thin coat of gloss black enamel over just the old logos - NOT the whole engine - and then applying dry-transfer lettering worked pretty well. It wasn't quite perfect, but WAY better than magnetic lettering with its thick backing.

IIRC there were two Old Curmudgeons, plus an energetic fifty-ish Apprentice Curmudgeon and only one (1) young Whipper-Snapper ...

IIRC, two sets of white four-inch-tall by 20-plus-foot-long "CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD" lettering - with a pair of 24" x 26" white heralds - cost a bit under $500.  And Of course in our case, with several dedicated Tuzigoots helping out (Trü-Sei-Güt ≅ "True Believers" in the phömitic ancient Norse of their/our ancestors) the labor was free - see photos at bottom of [ngdiscussion.net].
