Couldn't have said it better, Fred. They have always been totally different and equally attractive on their own merits. This constant "C&TS is better because it's authentic" BS is just that: BS!
The Durango and Silverton is authentic Durango and Silverton with four trains a day, each way, great pacing territory and lots of class in the process. Not only that but it goes somewhere. It is absolutely fantastic because of all of that.
The C&TS is authentic shoestring D&RGW narrow gauge, with rustic charm of the frontier towns it serves, some great pacing territory and lot's of spunk in its management and crews. And it is absolutely fantastic because of all of that.
They are separate operations with separate and endearing charms and neither is "better" than the other. Get over it.
