I don't claim to be an expert, but the early steam engines, especially the wood fired ones were a colorful lot indeed! The Promontory replicas have recently been repairted and they look like a carnival!
Apparantly coal dust took away a lot of the color
and as Victorian colors moved further back in time the engines were mostly black. And then most of the narrow gauges were typical short lines without much cash to paint up fancy color schemes.
