I'll pass along a "primitive" railfan story my dad past along to me about the 800s. When he was in grade school back in the dark ages, his dad took him out to see an 800 at Brady, Nebraska, that was supposed to average 100mph. My dad said his dad dragged him out there, the train flew by and left them in a cloud of smoke and cinders. The station master came out and said the train was a little slow since it had to slow down for Buttermilk Curve between Gothenburg and Brady...it was clocked at only 95mph.
And this is a narrow gauge story because.......oh yeah, several decades later the WP&Y 69 ran for a couple of years in North Platte on the Scouts Rest Ranch...yeah, that was it!
