South Park, finally somebody has the same sentiment I do.
I think one big folly they did early on was the (IMHO) stupid name. Cumbres and Toltec and the stupid nicname and logo it got CATS.
There are so many reasons the D&S is world renowned by casual rail fans and non rail fans alike, yet lots of railfans have no idea the C&T exists. I have to educate people when I encounter them.
The C&T should have been named Scenic San Juan, advertising living history of the route of the famous San Juan. Along with this, having Pulman Green cars that closely resemble the originals. (With vestibules)
Yes, Im nitpicking a bit, but it would have made marketing much better and lended more to the living history.
Ads could have showed historic photos of Presidents standing at Toltec Gorge and such and showen a current photo specail, with a very similar looking train in the same spot. "Come ride into history" or some similar slogan.
Diesels would just not cut it if they replaced Steam. I was not aware of the 19 excursions for train chasing. What a neat Idea. Very similar to how the Goose runs were done when I was there in 99.
If you let your history and heritage go, what is left behind?
And the comment on not using old cars because they are too worn out.... give me a break, Knotts, the D&S, that road has the WSLC #9, the D&S and most others, all use historic equipment.
