Gavin,
I was pleased that this engine made it home to the UK. I have lots of shots of it in regular service in 1984. It just happened to be the engine I got a cab ride in(Fouriesburg to Bethlehem) as the second engine of a doubleheader. The engineer told me he was running the 3405 the next morning on the Saturday Only passenger train to Ficksburg, which departed Bethlehem at 7 am. It runs workers back to Lesotho for the weekend. Then the empty train runs back to Bethlehem after turning the engine.
We got some great stuff of that train. I have a few scans, which after downsizing will try to post eventually. One of my favorite alltime SA shots is 3405 accelerating away from Slabberts on that early saturday morning train. I fear that had 3405 not gone back to the UK, it would likely have been scrapped. I read someplace that 3405 ran under its own power to Durban to be shipped. I think I put that info in our video, but can't remember off hand the date it was sent to the UK. Still a nice story. I had heard rumors that they were going to build some 3' 6" tracks for it to run on? Or am I thinking of the Garratts?
