Michael....you are right I forgot to address the Red Devil question.
The Answer is that yes, we saw it one day. A group was riding the daily passenger train both directions from Kimberly-De Aar and Return and requested special power. I found out the day before since we happened to catch the 3511(Last Condensor) on the daily local headed south to De Aar.
They told us what was going on. The Red Devil ran south the next day, and we caught it at Kraankuil and chased it southward for a few miles.
We had been involved in an accident the day before, and had to spend time with the local authorities, so we missed some of the run. We did get some shots of the 3511 from De Aar to Kraankuil as well.
I have a couple of video shots(see our previews for SA Steam), and I think Kathi has a couple of stills, all shot in noon-time lighting on the SB run. The two least favorite engines of all time of mine in South Africa are the Red Devil, and the twin Stacked engine you had next to it in your slide. As John Craft would say about a CF7 Diesel...."A perfectly good F7 was destroyed to make that monstrosity, or something like that". Thats the way I feel about the Red Devil and the other twin stacker that was another David Wardale play machine. Had something been done with these machines to enhance and extend steam in South Africa or elsewhere, then maybe I would have embraced it more. To me it is only a novelty, and I would rather shoot 3436 or any other workaday 25NC over the Red Devil any day. I guess by now you can tell I dislike the Red Devil. Sorry I did not address his question, but I don't have a good still shot anyway, so Michael has filled in with that for us.
