John,
Here are a couple of shots of the Condenser, No. 3511, taken in April of 1985. The first photo is at Kimberly station, ready to head south with the morning passenger.
On the second shot, I was trying to get ahead of the 3511, heading north out of DeAar when it met the southbound Orange Express somewhere near Hautkraal. Taken with one hand on the wheel and one hand on the camera, doing 60 on a dirt road. Don't try this at home!
The third shot is the Red Devil, double heading with a normal 25NC on a northbound freight, taken near Heuningneskloof, also in 1985. You can see the red was quite a bit lighter than in 1999. Check out the difference in the front end between the two locos. Also note that both water feed lines from the top check go back to the injectors below the cab on the regular 25NC, but one line on the Red Devel goes forward to the feedwater heater that was located inside the smokebox.
All shots on the Kimberly to DeAar double track main line.
