There were several engines modified including at least one 19D 4-8-2.

The main stomping grounds for these engines was De Aar to Beaufort West
which is south of De Aar, and has less water. After that line was Electrified(dieselized first when electrics freed up diesels in other regions), the Condensors were operated mainly from De Aar to Kimberly.
Most were de-condensed as we like to call them, back into regular 25NC(Non Condensors), which was a really good thing. Hey, its better than scrapping, and the condensors sounded really weird. I had no problem with the looks of a condensor, it was the jet plane whinning that was a bit hard to get used to. We saw the 3511 in 1984, and there is a clip of it and the Red Devil, in the link to the preview of SA I put in above. If I could figure out how to embed these into the post you could just click on it, but for now I have to do it the old fashioned way.
