Greg,
My apologies for intruding on your post, but Brian asked for a photo of the Red Devil.
The first photo is the Red Devil, Class 26 #3450 leading a 15F 4-8-2 around the curve at Kilmarnock, on the Bloemfontein to Bethlehem line. Shot in 1999, it reflects the final appearance of the Red Devil, which changed quite a bit over the years.
The second photo is at Theunisson, on the Bloemfontein to Jo'burg line. It shows the Red Devil, next to the BI Ebbing, #3454 which was the other modified 25th class. The 3454 was equipped with side by side dual stacks, unlike the Red Devil which had in line dual stacks. Note the long "sausage" tender, which reflects its conversion from a 25 Condensing.
This shot also shows one of the important lessons of railfan photography in South Africa. Since the engines were huge, but narrow gauge, the running gear was tucked in under the running boards and unless you had decent low level or side light, it was all dark. This photo was taken with nose on light, but it was a unique set up, one I would be unlikely to see again.
