J.B. Bane:
Your Whitney photos on the Sumpter Valley are very interesting! It sure is different from the last time I explored the Whitney area in 1971.
The main street was the grade and there were buildings on both sides with a de-trucked box car near the east end, IIRC. South of town was the sawmill, out in a field that had become a bit of a marsh. I drove my International Scout out there on what once was the approach road to the mill but had become just two tire ruts. When the road became marshy, I stopped to photograph the large mill and climbed up on the Scout's roof, where I had a photography platform. Got the photos and then looked up. An almost solid cloud of mosquitos was hovering right over my head with more coming from the direction of the mill.
I scrambled down, decided I didn't need to get any closer to the mill, and backed out the way I'd gone in.
The photos are among my 60,000 or more negs and slides that have to be scanned someday.
