Lest there be any confusion, the Promontory replicas of Jupiter and #119 were built to be oil fired (never propane) and operated as oil burners until the early 1990's, at which time they were both converted to their historically correct fuels (wood for Jupiter and coal for #119) with new grates being cast for each from a pattern taken from a Union Pacific C-57. (This grate pattern fit across the fabricated grate bar supports perfectly! Talk about serendipity!) During the 1980's the locomotives were fired using waste oil from Hill AFB, which occasionally made for some especially acrid carcinogenic smoke, smells, and colors, and this supplier was discontinued.
What I find fascinating is that these replicas will in the next few years have existed longer than either of the originals, which were scrapped around the turn of the century.
Now, how can we ever duplicate the most miraculous achievement in U.S. government since the miracle in Philadelphia, using tax dollars to build new steam locomotives!
