I was glanced at the cover of the May Trains again and thought how lucky we were to save 64 miles of narrow gauge and how it has a continuity back to the original laying of track in the 1880's.
The D&SNG is about 46 miles long but can claim continuous operation since 1881 whereas the C&TS was idled (but not dimantled) from 1968 to 1970.
I then realised the White Pass fits in the C&TS catagory in that it is still in place but not always operation. I think the White Pass is about 100 miles long.
The Eastie (EBT) also fits here with a milage of about 30 miles if I recall correctly.
One interesting item in all of these - they have equipment that was used by their respective owner when in common carrier service. They are also all narrow gauge.
I got to thinking about the Strassburg RR that is about 15 miles long and has evolved (similar to the D&SNG) from a freight common carrier to a tourist common carrier (it still hauls some freight but now relies on tourism for most of its revenue).
Are there any other tourist RR's that are similar to those I've mentioned above and how long are they?
One that comes to mind is the Sierra RR but they sold off the tourist section to the State of California and so I do not think would fit.
