I spent two weeks in 1985. Turned the rental car in with 10,000 km on the odometer! A lot less steam than what John's 1983 list showed. The GMAM's were down to shunting. The ballast trains had ended. Breton to Lothair was still double headed 24's and of course Kimberley to DeAar was still very active. Bloemfontein to Bethlehem still had the overnight passenger and several freights. The George to Knysna line remained active into the late 1990's.
