I continue to be alarmed at the conversation over the idea of a Chama Visitors Center and a very obvious lack of concerns over the other long range issues that MUST be considered.
IF the Center is built,.. when the last of the paint is dry, the building will immediately start to self-destruct, as all man made things do in the climate of the Rocky Mountain. Who will pay for the upkeep? Where will those funds come from?
If rumors are true, that the two-story building will use the first floor for the Center, and the second floor will be HQ for the "Friends"....how will a public subsidy (read "Friends") be justified by using public moneys. That 99 year lease for One Dollar per year is clearly a public subsidy of a private sector enterprise, and is illegal as hell...from my viewpoint...or have the Friends succeeded in edging their way into being an 'official arm of the bi-State RR Compact." Are the friends even mentioned in the official 'Compact'?
There are other substantive issues to be considered here, and everyone seems to have this "If you build it...they will come" attitude which is not the way anyone in today's business world approaches this kind of a project.
Just my two-cents worth.
