Hey guys,
If our opinions matter at all, mine is that my first glimse of the former D&RGW at Chama was, coming in from the east, first thing seen was the water tank then the coaling tower. I relive that thrill every time I enter Chama from that direction. Now entering town from the west, I love to take pictures at the wye. I can only imagine what that would be like with a two story modern visitor center. I believe if the powers that be think that a visitor center obstructing any views of the yard is a good thing, they better rethink. What percentage of visitors are going to revisit in years to come because of the visitor center? I try to get there, from ILL. at least once a year, to photograph the trains, stay a couple nights, eat meals, buy gasoline, and a car repair sometimes, so does my opinion matter any less than a rider of the trains. I'm sure you Chama residents can figure out where most of the riders stay overnight, and if you must build a visitor center, build it where it's chances of getting the most entrys is best, but keep it away from camera shot of the RR. The old mill west of the wye would get my vote, but how many visitors would go out of their way to visit an unknown, I think that if a visitor center is an absolute neccesity,
incorporate into the station. Please don't divert precious $s from RR funds to build a new building.
IMHO,
