what i did this summer (i would highly reccomend this, it worked out well) is started in Albuquerque and went to Santa Fe for the night. The next day I had a cab ride on the SFS and then headed up 84 to 285 and up to Antonito, and I stayed in Alamosa. Also, the SFS gets out at a time that you (in good weather) can reach Antonito before the train arrives. The next day I went to Antonito and rode westbound. Then stayed overnight in Chama. Next day, up the hill again but now on 4% grade. Then, you already have your car at the Antonito Depot, and stay in Alamosa. Then the next day ride the new San Luis and Rio Grande over to La Veta, by the time you get back, you can reach Durango by around 9ish if you take Wolf Creek Pass. It takes longer to go via Chama but if you want to see the yard at night, then by all means do so. The next day, to Silverton! Then you can spend a few days in Durango and do some sightseeing and such. Then return to Albuquerque via 550 south (over the Farmington grade) and down through Cuba to Albuquerque. Thats the route I took for railfest this year and it worked well
