when you go ahead and plan it, i would reccomend this option for riding the C&TS. Start in Chama First. The climb up the hill is something you cannot miss. I would actualy take the train two days in a row (even though you would ride the same consist). Start in Chama and go up the hill, and continue to Antonito. This allows for a possible double header and then some drift down the other side. Right next to the Antonito terminal is the Narrow Gauge Motel. I would reccomend staying there. The next day, you ride back to Chama, thus giving the climb up from the other side, and the descent from Cumbres Pass. If that option does not suit your plans, they try the one way from either direction (whichever you feel you want to do) and then include the bus return.
